Bennington CrossFit hosts powerlifting meet - Bennington Banner

BENNINGTON -- Bennington Crossfit hosted the inaugural powerlift meet in Vermont sanctioned by USA Powerlifting on Saturday.

Only three of the 13 competitors were Bennington residents. Others drove in from nearby New York and New England states for the weightlifting competition that awards lifters with the heaviest one-repetition maximum.

Crossfit owners Kitsia and Jerod Sausville, and Ryan McKenna of Bennington were the three local competitors at the meet. The powerlifting events included a deadlift, which all participants had to compete in, as well as bench press and back squat.

The day started with a weigh in and warm up. Then, men and women of all ages competed within an assigned weight class, and had three opportunities to reach their heaviest one-rep maximum, gradually increasing weight every chance.

Kitsia Sausville said that the gym's involvement in the Bennington Barbell Club influenced her decision to start a powerlifting meet in Bennington, and hopes it returns annually. After the planning of a meet with another powerlifting federation fell through earlier this year, USAPL contacted the Sausvilles to have its first Vermont meet bear fruit.

'It's exciting to see all of your hard work really come to be,' Kitsia Sausville said. 'We've been training for several months for this meet, so it's fun to see everything pay off.'

Sausville continued, 'Our purpose with the barbell club is to prepare people for different competitions,' which can be anything from powerlifting, to Strongman, Crossfit and Olympic lifting competitions.

'We are hoping to break some records today; at least with the three of us from Vermont. Because this is the first sanctioned meet, there are not many record holders here. We are setting the standard,' she said.

The Sausvilles are relatively new to the sport. Saturday was only Jerod's second powerlifting competition.

He said, 'I've only been training for powerlifting for about a year. I've done other bodybuilding and team events, but this is something different to try out. It really takes a lot out of you.'

To improve the competitive edge and make strength gains, individuals have to get a little creative in their regimen.

'Sometimes after a good six months to a year of training, you hit a ceiling,' Jerod Sausville said. 'It's tough, but one way to get over that is to just add more workouts and make them more intense.'

It's also easy to overtrain, and regress in strength. For powerlifters, it's about finding the right balance between hard work and rest.

To prepare for a meet, lifters will often work out about four times a week with a pre-programmed regimen. As a meet draws closer, the athletes will start practicing the commands that the facilitators give.

In terms of the physical component to competition, powerlifting is different from bodybuilding. Powerlifters will often lift fewer days, and do fewer but heavier repetitions. That gives muscles more of a chance to recover and grow stronger. Powerlifters also commit to a generally high-calorie diet.

Bodybuilders care less about strength and more about size than a powerlifter might, so they exercise more often, and lift less weight at a higher amount of repetitions. They might also consume a diet geared toward lean muscle and lower fat intake.

There is a large mental component to preparing for a meet as well.

'You're constantly thinking, 'okay, where am I at with my numbers? What have I been doing and eating to successfully lift?' So, you start planning where you are going to be,' Kitsia Sausville said.

More than 20 spectators turned out to observe the meet on Saturday.

Between entry and spectator fees, money raised was split between USAPL and Crossfit, which helps support athletes in its barbell club with those funds.
