KIMT News 3 - A new study suggests that reaching for artificial sweeteners to avoid the real stuff may be trading one evil for another. The benefits and risks of artificial sweeteners has been questioned for decades. According to recent research at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel, artificial sweeteners may lead to type 2 diabetes.

Scientists performed several experiments, mostly on mice, to show that artificial sweeteners may disrupt the body's ability to regulate blood sugar. According to researchers, that causes metabolic changes which can be a precursor to diabetes. The scientists did point out that their work must be repeated before they draw some clear conclusions, and one local dietician would agree.

'With all food studies, we really should wait until they study it in-depth, right now it's still in that developmental stage. Almost everybody agrees it's a good start, but a lot more study needs to be done to make sure that's exactly what everybody is going to see, rather than jumping to a lot of conclusions,' says registered dietitian, Keith Hargis.

For now, Hargis says folks with concerns should really moderate how many diet sodas they drink, and other products with artificial sweeteners in them.
