Kim Kardashian Follows Ketogenic Diet: It Aids Weight Loss, Reverses Type 2 ... - International Business Times AU

Several celebrities are following the low carb Ketogenic diet. This includes Kim Kardashian who followed a LCHF Ketogenic diet. The Examiner reported that she had lost 56 pounds in 6 months, after the birth of her daughter North in June 2013. Her post pregnancy weight vanished by following Atkins weight loss plan that limited her carbohydrate intake to 60g per day.

Reuters Kim Kardashian arrives at the Teen Choice Awards 2014 in Los Angeles, California August 10, 2014.

The ketogenic diet is a low carb diet that includes high fat, moderate protein; the proportions are roughly 65 percent, 5 percent and 30 percent, respectively. The reason that this diet works is because with more fat and less carbohydrates, the body stops using glycogen and uses fat for energy instead.

Colette Heimowitz, vice president of Atkins Nutritionals and author of The New Atkins Made Easy said that the diet helps curb one's appetite as well. 'Low-carb, high fat diets curb hunger better than low-fat diets because fat keeps you feeling full.'

While Kardashian's body looks stunning after the weight loss, she is one among the many celebrities who have undergone weight loss after following the ketogenic diet. Sharon Osbourne, Honey Boo Boo's mother Mama June also lost 120 pounds by following the diet.

The diet not only helps reducing the circumference of your waist, but it also has a lot of health benefits. The ketogenic diet helps in combating depression, managing epilepsy and reversing type 2 diabetes. The Examiner stated that it could also prevent diseases like Alzheimer's and cancer.

Obesity expert and author of New Atkins for a New You, Dr. Jeff Volek has been following the diet for 20 years and he states that the diet has significant health benefits,

Volek along with Stephen D. Phinney authored The Art and Science of Low Carbohydrate Living. Phinney with regard to the common belief that the body requires a certain amount of carbohydrates to function said that it is a myth propagated by the USDA and the dietetic establishment. Dr Phinney explains that a ketogenic diet is one where the carbohydrate intake per day would range between 10 to 50 grams and the rest of the diet would consist of fats and protein. A copious amount of non starchy vegetables when added to the diet balances it, he said.

researchers also state that the diet can prevent and treat cancer. Canceractive website stated that Dr Dominic D´Agostino Assistant Professor at South University supports the diet as a means to treat cancer. He was treating patients with advanced cancer using a ketogenic diet.

According to the site, Dr. Thomas Seyfried, a pioneer in the nutritional treatment of cancer and author of as a Metabolic Disease, said that the ketogenic diet is the best treatment for glioblastoma that is the most common and malignant form of brain cancer. His research shows cancer is a metabolic -- not a genetic -- disease. He has done research on the diet for decades and states that it is far better than chemotherapy for most cancer types.

Seyfried's decades of research suggest that the ketogenic diet beats chemotherapy for most cancers. He said that he is confident that the diet can replace the standard of care for brain and other cancers.

Apart from cancer, the diet helps with epilepsy as well, WebMD stated. The site pointed to a study in which 4 out of 10 children who were suffering with seizures experienced a reduction in the seizures to one half after following the ketogenic diet. It is not a proven treatment the site stated neither is it known as to why the diet is more successful in treating children than adults.

Syfried advises that the diet must be followed under the supervision of a nutritional therapist trained in the Ketogenic Diet.
