Here are our first-ever Health Care Innovators honorees - Baltimore Business Journal

The Baltimore Business Journal has selected honorees for its first-ever Health Care Innovators awards.

These winners created new health care products and strategies that have made health care more accessible, efficient and effective. They will be featured in the Nov. 7 issue of the Baltimore Business Journal and will be recognized at a breakfast at the Hotel at Arundel Preserve on Nov. 7. Farzad Mostashari, the former national coordinator for health IT for the federal health department, will be the keynote speaker at the event.

Here are the winners:

* Health Care IT Company: WellDoc Inc. this year launched BlueStar, the first FDA-approved disease therapy program administered via mobile app. BlueStar enables diabetics to track blood glucose levels, medications, their diet and exercise on a cellphone. WellDoc recently raised $20 million to market BlueStar. The Baltimore company also develops systems for multi-disease management.

* Medical Device: CSA Medical Inc. has pioneered a method for less invasive body tissue removal during surgery with its truFreeze spray, a liquid nitrogen spray that flash-freezes unwanted tissue. The tissue then thaws and is then treated with truFreeze again, destroying targeted tissue without disturbing underlying connective tissue. The Lutherville company's cryotherapy system has been approved for use in dermatological and gynecological surgery, as well as general surgery.

* Biotech Innovator: Osiris Therapeutics Inc. was the world's first company to get market approval for a manufactured stem cell product. Prochymal, Osiris' drug, is in clinical trials to treat graft-vs-host disease and Crohn's disease, as well as the repair of heart tissue after a heat attack, the protection of pancreatic cells in type 1 diabetics and the repair of lung tissue in patients suffering from pulmonary disease. Osiris, based in Columbia, is also developing products aimed at arthritis and bone regeneration.
