How to gain acceptance at your workplace - TheHealthSite

A new research has revealed that an employee feeling excluded at work can end up becoming a weasel in order to demonstrate their value to the group. The research at University of Georgia Terry College of Business showed that employees can feel disconnected from their work when they think they weren't invited to lunch or when they feel isolated from group activities like getting coffee. Co-author Marie Mitchell said that when individuals are faced with a risk of social exclusion, like being excluded from a group, someone mistreating them or abusing them, it motivates some pretty unsavory behaviors.

Mitchell added that when a person believes that they are at risk for exclusion, they assume that there is something about their personality or their makeup that suggests they're not a valued group member, so they have to do something above and beyond what they're currently doing in order to benefit their work group, like undermining anybody outside that workgroup, cheating to enhance their group's performance level and lying to other workgroups.

Mitchell suggested that the mangers should take care in handling people who are not integrating well with the rest of the employees and try to get them better integrated with their colleagues. She continued that employees who are at risk of exclusion are far likelier not to engage in these behaviors if they think the entire work group will be held accountable if they behavior isn't ethical and also structures in place that demonstrate a value to ethical behavior, and even include for example, bonuses or other motivators for that behavior, that can help.
