Caring for our Community

The two were sitting together at a table off to the side of the dining hall at Riverview Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Flandreau the other day. Sharon Grafing and Lynda Kuntz were visiting quietly, greeting friends occasionally and observing inbetween conversations, all that was going on in the room.

Its a view the two friends and colleagues have shared for a very long time. 31 years to be exact. And Grafing and Kuntz were now talking about what life might be like, after they retire.

A celebration was held for the two this past week as they both leave a wonderful legacy of service to others and their community, with their departures.

Grafing has worked as a Certified Dietary Manager and Food Protection Professional throughout her career. It is an important job and one she is proud of. Dietary needs, of course, play a critical role in our overall health as any of us age.

Its very important, we keep a special intake sheet on all of the residents here detailing their food intake, say for those who have lost weight or who have a certain nutritional need, a disease, dementia or alzheimers, we really have to pay attention to what their body needs, said Grafing.

What that looks like however, has changed a lot over the course of the past 31 years. Things arent as rigid as they once were.

It seems as the years have gone by, there is a belief that the less restricted the diet, the more our residents or anyone that is aging, might eat. If they have lived until they are 80 or 90 or older and not had a restricted diet at that time, they did something really well then, Grafing said, laughing with her friend.

Kuntz a Certified Nursing and Respiratory Treatment Aid echoed those sentiments, saying the changes in nursing over the past 31 years have been tremendous. One big improvement has simply been in the ability to perform routine, daily tasks for the residents. She said technology has given them all a little help, including the residents.

Bath systems in particular have changed. We even have TVs in the rooms now. We used to have just a white tub with a portable lift on it. The lift is more modern, the tub, its all just more modern, said Kuntz. She added, you never stop learning, there are always new ideas that come up as far as working with the residents and taking care of them. Youre always learning.

While the two are looking forward to taking care of themselves for a while as they enter retirement, they both agreed, Riverview is a place they will miss. Mostly because of the people here.

The people, the residents, the staff, our coworkers and the friends you make here. They wont go away, but when youre used to seeing them day after day, it might be tough, said Kuntz.

Its been fun, enlightening and educational. Im retiring because I thought 31 years was enough, its time to give someone else a chance. I will miss it, but I plan to come back and volunteer often, said Grafing.
